This is me.
Manila, & other things

What a stupid title. Oh well. :D

I'm back!

OK, so I've been back since Monday (or was it Sunday night?) but I've just been quite busy. Yes yes, too busy to blog. (hangs head down in shame) I've been practicing my violin for a special church meeting this Saturday. I'm already a little excited, and it was fun to spend time with some of my church buddies during the practices.

Anyway, Manila was really great. I got to hang out with my really cute cousins, eat good food (as always), shop a little, and help my Mom with whatever she thought to do.

So... the photos.

Us :)

the littlest cousin of all

We stayed with my cousins, and pretty much caught up with how they were doing. I really miss them, and their hugs and their laughter and their... OK, you get the idea.

I'd describe how hanging with them was like but I'm out of words. Suffice to say, my sister and I were drowned by oodles and oodles of cuteness and lovely memories to last us a while.

We went to a lot of places...

malls,

little Chinese shops in the Manila Chinatown,

and restaurants.

We mustn't forget restaurants. Of course, if you know me personally (or have read my blog for quite a while), you will get a sketchy idea that this post will not bypass the food I've eaten without descriptions.

We did have a lot of lovely meals. Or maybe I'm just easily pleased and the food wasn't that good, I don't know.

Look! Raw food!

This was part of a shabu-shabu meal we had with our cousins. To the uninitiated, shabu-shabu is cooking your own food before eating it in the restaurant. So there's a large plate of raw eatables (seafood, meat, cabbage, eggs, etc.), and you dump it into a cooking pot of sorts. This is heated by a stove attached under the table.

I've eaten this way a lot of times, but it just occured to me that this is probably the only place that you can't blame about the quality of the food you're eating. I mean, you cooked it, so you can't complain.

Just a random thought.

As usual, I cooked more than enough for myself and ended up appalingly full. Cool.

Another really good meal we had was in Robinson's Ermita with my aunt, my Mom, my sister, and one of their friends.

Everything was just right, and just... WOW. The fish wasn't too dry, and the chicken was good. I don't feel like describing all this much (and boring you, dear Reader, to tears), but I'd like to point out that I liked the tofu.

my sister eating said tofu

My aunt decided to call for tofu on the off-chance it was available. And it actually was. This evidently wasn't something to expect since the tofu in this restaurant was out-of-this-world, and ran out pretty quickly. So... yay us.

It was really soft and creamy which I did not expect. Sweet syrup was poured over it which made it quite good. And that's saying something from me since I really don't like tofu.

I also got the chance to get... what do you know... gummy bears!

I haven't had them in ages so it was worth mentioning.

So back to the present for now.

I have a new blog design. I would have kept my previous one for longer but there were getting to be quite a lot of people with the same one (because I let people download it, duh) so I decided to try to be original again.

I've got a new song playing too. I've been listening to Downhere lately and this song is one of my favorites. It's kind-of surprising that almost nobody knows about this band, especially since they have such great songs.

This particular song has really great meaning. I mean, how many times have we all felt we were useless? It's nice to remember that God has plans for all of us, and He loves us enough to care about what we're doing.

So I guess that's about it. I'm tired of typing. Bye, everyone!

Goodbye, everyone!
2 had an opinion on what I wrote.

In about three hours, I shall be riding the skies in a large hunk of metal known as an airplane. Yeah, I'll be in Manila, our country's capital. It's a sudden trip with my sister and my mother; we're into spontaneity.

So right now, I'm just hurrying to pack because I haven't started yet (shame on me, really), and I am lightheaded from hunger because I have not eaten lunch. My sister is parading around in different outfits to put into our luggage, LOL.

Anyway, this is just a short post, really. Just to let people know where I've been to if they miss me. Will you miss me? ;)

Goodbye, internet! Goodbye, internet friends! For a few days, anyway.

For those who are having their semestral break, enjoy it! For those who are in school, well, enjoy it too. :D

My cooking, other's cooking, & a new skin
0 had an opinion on what I wrote.

I am sitting in front of the computer with a towel on my head. This is because I have just taken a bath at 3 pm. And before that, I was in bed reading nonsensical magazines when I woke up at 12 pm. And before that, I slept at 3 am.

I don't think I'm ever going to do that again unless there are emergencies that cause me to miss sleep. The whole day just gets shot in the foot when my sleeping schedule is tampered with.

Anyway, to the posts. I actually have something to write about today! *Daisy claps her hands in unadulterated glee.*

After months (yes, months), our kitchen stove is being used again! By me, of course.

Yeah, no one cooks in our place if I don't do it. Everyone's too busy. This was already mentioned in a previous post made ages ago so I shall not give too much detail.

Anyway, anticipating the amount of free time I'd have on my three weeks of vacation, my Mom and I went grocery shopping yesterday. We were just going to "look around", but we ended up buying a cart of foodstuffs and other household needs.

We had trouble lugging them to the car but that's the general female species for you. We go into shops to buy one thing then come out with a dozen. (I understand not everyone is this way but that was a general statement.)

So to prevent the vegetables we bought from rotting, I cooked up asparagus yesterday.

Maybe you, dear Reader, are going "What? Was that it?" Yeah, that was it. I don't really get how people can dislike vegetables. In our house, we love them when we can get them. Which is not very often.

It's always fun to see how food gets transformed when they're cooked. I mean, raw meat looks really different from say, roast pork with potatoes on the side. So I started out with greenish stalks...

...to shorter chopped greenish stalks in a pan...

...to shorter chopped and less green stalks in a glass container.

OK, so there wasn't much difference here, but vegetables seem to be an exception the rule. They do shrink though.

Anyway, we went out for dinner yesterday due to my uncle visiting from abroad. And I have to say that it was good.

Just culinary heaven

I had hainanese chicken and some cold tea concoction. The chicken was just amazing from the rice to the way the chicken was cooked to the sauce down to the juices the chicken was swimming in. I finished everything. Even the cucumber and lettuce that was supposed to be just decoration.

Dessert was mango panna cotta which was also really good. The taste of mango sauce with creaminess was just... satisfying.

The bowl was pretty big too.

My uncle got some sort of native ice cream. To borrow his words, "it's fine but just strange." The ice cream really had this homemade quality to it. But it must not have been too strange because he ate it all.

Oh, I've figured out why it must have been strange. It had no milk in it. Imagine ice cream with no milk... you'll be imagining our native ice cream. :D

Well, that was nice. I'm making myself hungry again because I missed breakfast and lunch. This day's really just whacked out.

I feel like writing more but this post seems pretty long as it is. So I shall stop.

Oh yes, new skin submitted once again. Someone asked me to make a skin on Orlando Bloom, and after one month, my brain finally spit out a design. It was pretty hard. Maybe because I'm not a great fan of Orlando Bloom. Mind you, he's OK. Just OK.

You can download it from here if you want his face plastered all over your blog. Which I don't, but some people do. :)

So up to here for now. I'm going to eat my late late late lunch. Bye!

Adventures & misadventures
1 had an opinion on what I wrote.

Today's Friday the Thirteenth, people! It's my lucky day.

And Arn2x's too. We had a serious (mis)adventure today.

Me and Arn2x

To begin with, Arn2x won a ticket for a drinking party on a contest over the radio. And if you think this drinking party is for people to drink water, I applaud your innocence. Actually, it's for beer which is why Arn2x had absolutely no use for the ticket and was finding someone to give it to.

But still, winning something... Just dialing the number takes a lot of guts. It's the principle of the thing.

So we went to the radio station and rejoiced in the fruits of Arn2x's victory. OK, so we didn't. The ticket wasn't there yet and we went back to school. But first, we got called in by a traffic policeman for making a wrong turn.

We basically got into an intersection, and I was like "Arn, is there a sign saying we can't turn?" The two of us looked left and right and didn't see anything, so off we went on our misadventure. When the policeman made us stop at the curb, we both started to pray.

I think we must have looked appropriately pathetic because he left us with a warning and gave me my license back. Whee. And so God got us out of the mess I put us into and saved me from long hours of driving seminars and expensive fees.

*****

eating, as usual

Cookie, Arn2x, and me had a craving for cheap yummy siomai in hot sauce so we ended up across our school happily eating with our hands. Henri and Joni opted to get the siomai as take-out and went back in the school.

Seriously, it's good. For 24 Philippine pesos (less than half a US dollar), we got three siomais dribbled with lovely sauce and calamansi juice and three wrapped heart-shaped rice pieces (otherwise known as puso to us).

So there it was.

And now, it's gone.

It's probably the last lunch (breakfast?) we'd have together before the semester ended. Yup, that's right. I have three weeks of lovely vacation in store to fool around with. I'll probably be working a little for my mother and zipping around on spontaneous trips. And eating, of course. We can't forget eating.

Not to mention blog designing. After three weeks of quiet from the artistic side of my brain, it finally spit out the blog layout you're staring at now. And it got me my sixth Skin of the Day on Blogskins.com.

Whee. Download it here.

Seriously though, I think God helps me out with these things. Half the time, I felt like I don't know what I'm doing. And that's usually the way it is with me in designing, studying, and the rest of my life. I draw a little, erase, cut, paste, undo, cut again, paste, undo, ask my sister for her cherished opinion, then sit back and stare at it. Soap, rinse, and repeat. Haha.

I shall leave you with a picture of my Mother's wonderful fruit salad in cream.

my Mother's wonderful fruit salad in cream

And oh, the lovely sandwich I had in a coffee shop last Sunday. It was one of those cold ones, and took a little time to get used to. I'm not much of a sandwich person but it was surprisingly good. Turkey slices, lettuce, tomatoes, and sliced hard-boiled eggs on wheat bread, yum... I want to eat it again.

an ugly blurred picture of a beautiful sandwich

Anyway, I'm happy. And I still have quite a bit to study. So I'll go now to strain my brains out of the sieve we all call Organic Chemistry. Goodnight, everyone!

Cookies, exams, & some deep stuff
4 had an opinion on what I wrote.

I now have about 15 minutes to make this post before my break finishes and I have to go back to studying.

I haven't really been on the computer for a long time. OK, so a few days may not be that long to some but I generally don't end the day without at least ten to fifteen minutes on the internet. So I haven't been making blog designs, checking on internet friends, reading my weekly newsletters, and everything. I bet my e-mail must be such a dump by now.

So let's start with the cookies.

One of our friends brought a bag of cookies for us two days ago. The sugar was just the thing we needed to gear up for all the cramming and studying we'd have to do. All these photos are taken by Arn2x, by the way (except for the ones she's in). You could say she was a guest photographer.

Lovely brownie

A cookie close-up

So the cookies and brownies were really great. I love how large the chocolate chips in them were, and how the cookie crumbled just right. The brownies also weren't too sweet (which I detest), and filled with fudge and dark chocolate. Yum.

Arn2 & Cookie all excited over the goodies

If you can't tell from all the pictures and my words, yes, we really enjoyed it.

But after that, it was time to crack our skulls on the books again.

I've been studying so much that my notes are the last thing I see when I sleep and the first thing I think about when I wake up. Lately, I've been waking up two hours earlier than usual to study. This is not really normal behavior. I've always been the perfect bad example for the saying "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." But there's just not enough time to study anymore.

And it didn't even seem to help in the exam I took in Calculus this morning. After three hours of scribbling and a headache, I can honestly say I've got a 50% chance of passing or failing.

But that's where God comes in. Though I did really bad, I still felt real peace when I passed my paper. I mean, I couldn't believe how I wasn't freaking out more. It was like God telling me I didn't have to worry and I could just give it to Him.

And that's such a lovely thing.

The crazy weekend
0 had an opinion on what I wrote.

The past few days have been real wild. Studying, filming, churching, and somehow squeezing in one and a half movies at home (more on the later), dinners out, shopping, and time with family. I found myself studying while waiting for food to arrive in different restaurants. But that's the way I've always been and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Last Friday and Saturday, my classmates and I filmed our English commercials at the house. We were actually three different groups that decided to film together so we could put all our projects in one CD (and save CDs). The teacher wanted to check our pronunciation in everyday life, I guess, and the project was pretty cool. If only it hadn't overlapped with so much other stuff.

I'd include the real videos here but I think my classmates would freak (especially the guy who played a princess in one of the commercials, LOL), so pictures will have to do.

Thank you, God, for perfect lighting!

This is actually the same room but somehow the lighting and stuff made it look different. The black line in between is a floor lamp. :) This was Hazel and Joni's phone commercial.

Cookie and I did two different ones. We did a mother-daughter one, and another on mouthwash (in which I acted like a very dramatic teenager).

a shot in the bathroom (one of our sets)

We all laughed a lot, especially at the bloopers. One of the guys almost fell in the fish pond when he tripped while running through a scene. I ran into the bathroom and took so long to lock the door (instead of the second it was supposed to be), and ended up collapsing in laughter.

All in all, it was fun and probably gives us a few memories to keep of college.

After that, we all had to crack open our Physics, Calculus, Chemistry Laboratory, and Computer notes and textbooks again. But it was a break.

I find that when I study I always end up having a lot of breaks. I eat, take 20 minute naps, and go out with my mother. I guess I'm a slacker at heart.

So following my normal routine, I decided to watch a cheesy teen flick during one of my breaks. And I popped She's The Man into the player. Not that I really like Amanda Bynes but the fact that it was loosely based on my favorite Shakespearean play (Twelfth Night rocks!) attracted me.

It was surprisingly fun. I mean, it's not Oscar material (and it never had that goal in mind so I didn't expect it to be), but the script lines weren't too stupid. Though the plot was predictable, it was still lovable. Just a cute movie about a girl pretending to be a guy and getting into all sorts of convoluted love triangles and whatnot.

Unfortunately, the DVD collapsed on itself halfway through. I have an idea what the ending is, but oh, I really want to see it! I mean, it's like unfinished business now. Why watch if you can't finish?

I scoured the malls for a copy of the movie but they didn't have any stock, so... I shall have to wait. LOL. What a break.

What I saw of it was funny though. In fact, here's one of my favorite scenes. Everyone thinks the heroine (pretending to be her brother in his new school) is a loser at this point since she obviously seems strange as she adjusts to her male status. So she gets her friends to help her out by making her look like a real ladies' man. She also dumps her brother's girlfriend (who she's never really liked) and gets in the good graces of the other guys. All in all, just funny and stupid.

Watch it.

We also celebrated my sister's birthday two weeks late yesterday. Yes, we finally did it. And we seem to have made up for it with effort. My sister had THREE cakes.

Cakes galore

I hope she enjoyed them. No wait, I know she did. We got her favorite cake. :D

OK, so my break's over. I'm going back to cracking my skull on schoolwork again. Physics and Calculus, here I (reluctantly) come!
